Get ready, online giants Amazon expanding in South Africa

Come see Issue 17 of the Newcastillian – Online Magazine!

The online retail giant, Amazon, is expanding in South Africa and it is a dream come true for those who enjoy shopping online. This does pose a rather major challenge to those businesses who are not currently developing a solid and professional online profile.

Amazon has had a significant presence in Cape Town since 2004, moving into a massive eight-floor building in the Mother City in late 2018, which houses its local AWS staff.

There are over 100 jobs on offers for its Web Services (AWS) segment, as the group starts planning to launch a special Africa Region during the first half of 2020, with the retail group setting its roots in Cape Town.

Over a year ago, Amazon had jobs listed for just over 50 available positions. A number which has since doubled to 118 posts.

The positions include software developers, support engineers and infrastructure managers. Amazon is also looking for UX designers, data scientists and security experts.

A lot of the positions call for multilingual professionals, who can speak Dutch and German, while covering work on its various systems, which includes AWS, Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) and E2M.

As Amazon enhances its digital footprint within South Africa, further reports state the vacancies are full-time positions and are broken down into six business categories. The categories include Amazon Web Services, Amazon Customer Service, Student Programs, Advertising, Business and Corporate Development and Human Resources.

All the positions are in Cape Town, but Amazon notes it offers a comprehensive relocation package as part of its offer. Furthermore, the group says it is busy expanding their team and have multiple positions available.

As Amazon sets itself in South Africa, it seems SA is truly connecting to the globe on a large scale and our shopping experience has increased tenfold, welcoming us to the digital era of shopping like never before.
