Blue skies, warm weather and laughter fill the air at the Farmers Hall on Saturday, April 27. This is one Saturday where the Newcastle community can officially cast all care to the wind and enjoy a line-up of epic and fun entertainment.
It is the last day of the Winter Festival 2019 and that means the entire community has an opportunity to enjoy the day at the event and break away from their mundane routines.

The day’s entertainment kicked off with two events, the Kakiebos Funduro which saw off-road motorcycle fans rev their engines in excitement, as well as the Potjiekos competition with singer Nadine.
At the Potjiekos competition, contestants cooked and chopped their favourite potjiekos recipes to tantalise taste buds.

This was followed by the AJD Meats eating competition, which saw a number of contestants eating as many pieces of boerewors as possible.


The winner of the competition was Siphiwe Vilakazi, followed by Martin Smith in second place and Jan Oosthuizen in third place.

From there, festival goers enjoyed the Planet Fitness Strongman Show, which saw members of the Chaos Crew show off their strength alongside local muscle men.



For sporting fans, the Champions Pro Wrestling (CPW) crew enthralled the festival goers with a series of fast, action-packed matches.


Further entertainment involved a colour festival, a foam party, a performance by local dance crew AJA Nachale NN Dance crew, Zulu dancers, a series of local musicians and a performance by DJ PSA.
Following the afternoon’s entertainment, Newcastle Mayor Dr Ntuthuko Mahlaba took to the centre stage, thanking the Winter Festival’s committee for their hard work.
“We must thank the leadership and volunteers as funds raised go towards charity.”
Furthermore, he further said the ANC would be donating R200 000 towards the Winter Festival 2020, ensuring it reached its full potential.

The mayor’s speech was followed by an epic performance from Shekhinah and Sjava. The two artists ensuring the audience thoroughly enjoyed themselves, ending the Winter Festival on a high note.


Hennie Pelser the project manager enthuses the event was well received. “It has been a tough year for everyone, but the team spirit of the Winter Festival Committee was awesome. We had a brilliant line-up of artists, then there are new events such as the funduro, the inflatable park and the new tents such as the ATKV tent.”

With the Winter Festival 2019 now done and dusted, plans are now underway to prepare for next year’s line-up.
