Ladysmith municipal employee shot dead

Newcastillian

The life of a senior employee from Ladysmith Local Municipality came to a tragic end on Thursday, February 7.

The municipality’s executive director of engineering and infrastructure services, Oscar Hlatshwayo, started his day off like any parent. By dropping his two children off at school. Minutes later, he was gunned down in an alleged ambush.

An eyewitness claims there were five cars between Hlatshwayo’s car and his own. Just as he drove past KFC, mere metres away from the traffic lights, the sound of gunshots filled the air.

KwaZulu-Natal spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbhele explains that Hlatshwayo attempted to drive after sustaining injuries from the gunshots. However, the gunmen followed him and shot him again, resulting in his death.

At present stage, it is unclear why Hlatshwayo was murdered. A murder docket is open and police investigations are underway.
