Ruth Archery, driven with purpose to help others

Children lead carefree lives, void of responsibility and stress. Their existence not plagued by the worries that wear adults down. Or is this the reality we as adults choose to see? Not taking note that there are children who face worrying obstacles?

At just 12-years-old, Ruth Archery is not your average primary school learner. Her need to help others has seen the birth of a campaign that can help children in their education, as well as save them from worrying about their parents’ financial constraints.

Named Pens for a Purpose, this campaign sees Ruth collecting stationery for learners, whose families cannot afford to fork out the cash for school supplies.

Ruth Archery is set to make a difference.

“At the beginning of the school year, I had no stationery and I was worried about how I was going to do my school work. My mom and I then went through my old school stationery to see what I could still use,” explains Ruth, who attends Lennoxton Primary School.

It was then that she wondered about other children who went through a similar problem, those who could not afford stationery. It was at that moment she began her campaign, working under her grandfather’s NGO, the Good Samaritan Foundation.

“I started asking for sponsors, so I could collect stationery. CNA, Checkers and Value City donated to the cause.”

Ruth also has a Facebook page dedicated to her cause. She is encouraging others to not only peruse the page but to support her initiative.

While determined to collect stationery for less fortunate children, Ruth is also looking for help in collecting fruit.

“There are children who don’t have lunch for school. Their families can’t afford it. Sometimes, they will bring a little money to the school and buy sweets, as it is cheaper than fruit and veggies. I want to help them as well.”

But, why is a 12-year-old girl so determined to help other school children?

“I know what it was like to go through it, not having stationery and worrying about the upcoming year. I don’t want others to go through the same.”

If anyone can assist, be sure to contact Ruth Archery through her Facebook page, Pens for a Purpose. By donating to her cause, you can make a difference in the life of a child.
