As a symbol of new life, babies signify joy and the power of family.

Yet, there are children who will never feel the comfort of their mother’s arms.

For these babies there is a glimmer of hope in the shape of St Martin’s Village.

St Martin’s Village is a home for abandoned, neglected and abused babies.

Over the past year, St Martin’s has worked tirelessly in ensuring it created a family-orientated lifestyle for the children in its care.

“We are currently running at full capacity with six children,” said Pastor Thomas Beneke from the Lutheran Church.

The children’s ages ranged from three months to four ages of ages.

With the new year in full swing, the home is determined to become self-sufficient.

“A fund-raising initiative is being held for St Martin’s Village and Gelykwater Primary School in Groenvlei,” Pastor Thomas said.

The fund-raising project will be a trail run which will be divided into a 10km, 20km and 50km run.

While the fundraiser would play an instrumental part in the home’s development, St Martin’s Village is looking at ways to generate a regular income for the lean months.

One project which the home is proud of, is its vegetable garden.

Pastor Thomas said there was a variety of veggies that Newcastillians could choose from at affordable prices.

With home grown vegetables available at a fraction of the price, residents can rest assure that purchasing produce from St Martin’s would play a positive role in the long run.
