The collision occurred shortly before 11am, causing disruption at the junction as traffic officials and first responders worked to secure the scene.
While the exact sequence of events is still under investigation, preliminary indications suggest that both vehicles were moving through the intersection when the impact occurred.
A traffic official at the scene said the circumstances surrounding the crash were not yet clear.
“The circumstances leading to the collision are still unclear at present, as those involved are still in a state of shock,” the official noted.
Emergency personnel treated the injured at the scene before transporting them to hospital. Charles Steyn of Magenta Emergency Medical Service confirmed that four people were injured in the collision.
“Two people sustained light injuries while the other two patients sustained moderate injuries, with paramedics assessing and treating the patients on scene before transporting them to hospital,” he said.
Following initial roadside treatment, the patients were taken to hospital for further medical assessment.
Speaking to Newcastillian News after the crash, one passenger described how suddenly the collision unfolded.
“I was in the back seat, and we were driving, and the next thing I remember was our vehicle and the Municipal bakkie colliding,” he said.
With the wreckage cleared and traffic flow restored, authorities will now work to determine the exact cause of the collision.
The incident once again draws attention to the risks associated with one of Newcastle’s busier intersections, particularly during periods of heavy traffic.
