The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Utrecht have launched an investigation into a tragic incident in which a 23-year-old man allegedly strangled his three-year-old child before taking his own life on Tuesday, 16 December 2025.
According to official reports, confirmed by Lizzy Arumugam from Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications, the incident occurred at Vaalbank Farm in Utrecht.

Police were alerted by an informant who reported that a man had killed his child. Officers immediately responded to the scene.
Upon arrival, police learned that the father had removed his child from the family home on Monday, 15 December 2025, and had subsequently threatened to kill the youngster the following day. As a result, a coordinated search operation was launched.
At approximately 14:00, the search team discovered the child’s body in a veld, lying near a tree. In close proximity, the father was found hanging from the same tree, having ended his own life.
The motive behind this devastating act remains unclear.
However, Arumugam emphasised, “An inquest case has been opened and further police investigations into the matter are underway.”
The tragic deaths in Utrecht underscore a grim reality in which domestic circumstances can escalate into catastrophic outcomes. While the motive behind the father’s actions remains unknown, the severity of the crime highlights the urgent need for investigation and inquest.
