KwaZulu-Natal residents are being urged to prepare for a potentially dangerous weather system, with the South African Weather Service (SAWS) issuing a Level 4 Warning for severe thunderstorms expected on Sunday, 12 October 2025.
According to SAWS, a shortwave trough will traverse South Africa on Sunday, while a surface trough is set to deepen over the central interior.

This combination of atmospheric conditions is expected to trigger widespread showers and thundershowers across KwaZulu-Natal.
Meteorologists have cautioned that several of these thunderstorms are likely to reach severe levels. SAWS has warned that affected areas may experience heavy downpours, damaging winds, intense lightning, and hail. The service further stated that the potential impacts could include:
- Flooding of roads, bridges, and both formal and informal settlements
- Damage to infrastructure caused by hail
- Danger to life due to fast-flowing water and swollen streams
- Major travel disruptions and related incidents
- Destruction or loss of property and infrastructure
The towns identified as being at risk include:
- Newcastle
- Vryheid
- Ladysmith
- Dannhauser
- Utrecht
- Underberg
- Estcourt
- Dundee
- Hlabisa
- Hluhluwe
- Greater Kokstad
- Indaka
With severe weather conditions anticipated across these and other areas, SAWS has appealed to residents to exercise extreme caution.
Communities are advised to remain indoors where possible and to avoid travelling unless absolutely necessary. Moreover, residents are strongly urged not to cross rivers or swollen streams where water levels exceed ankle height.
Should a vehicle become submerged in water, SAWS has stressed that motorists must abandon it immediately and move to higher ground. Members of the public are also reminded to avoid seeking shelter beneath trees or tall structures, as these pose significant lightning hazards.

In addition, the weather service has cautioned golfers and fishermen to suspend their activities until conditions improve, warning that both pursuits present serious risks to life during severe storms.
With KwaZulu-Natal facing yet another bout of extreme weather, disaster management teams and local authorities are expected to remain on high alert throughout Sunday. Residents are urged to remain vigilant, heed official warnings, and monitor SAWS updates closely.
