The terrified screams of a woman shattered the early hours of Saturday morning, 27 September 2025, when she was violently pulled from her car by two men, all while her horrified mother and three terrified children looked on.
The attack occurred in Aviary Hill, Newcastle, turning what was meant to be a simple family trip to Amanzimtoti into a nightmarish ordeal.

Speaking anonymously to Newcastillian News, the woman recounted that she and her mother were on their way to Amanzimtoti with her three children, as they were taking the woman’s oldest daughter to an event she was participating in.
“When we came out of the house, I saw the top of a man’s head sticking above the wall from outside the yard, and I asked if I could help him, and his head dropped. Suspicious, I waited a bit, and when I saw his head again, I called out to him again, asking if I could help with something.”
Unknown to the woman, there were two men hiding outside her wall and when they realised one of them had been spotted, they changed their plans. The woman explained that she saw a man walking away and went to the gate, observing him leave, while glancing around to see no one else.
“They fooled us, because as I started reversing out, there was a man suddenly at the door. He yanked the door open, and started grabbing at me. I managed to turn my body and started kicking at him, but he began pulling me out of the car by my leg,” she said.
The situation escalated further as the man’s accomplice joined in.
The woman’s mother recalled, “When my daughter was being pulled out of the car, I froze. I thought my daughter was going to be run over by the car, as it was still reversing and didn’t stop. When I saw her going under the car door, I half expected to feel the car go over her,” adding that all three of her grandchildren were in the car during the assault.
Miraculously, the young woman avoided being run over, but the attackers seized her cellphone while she lay on the ground. “I was petrified that they would get to my car and drive off with my children, so I immediately got up and rushed back into my car, which had stopped after crashing into the wall across the road,” she explained.
After going to a nearby fuelling station to clean her bloody nose, the woman contacted her husband, who is currently working in America, to inform him of the attack. He reminded her that her phone had a tracker, prompting her to contact Magenta Security. The phone was later located at the corner of Pikkewyn Street and Parakiet Street, hidden beneath leaves, with the suspects nowhere in sight.
The woman has since opened a police case, and she confirmed that she and her family are now undergoing counselling. “Reversing out of the yard for the first time after the attack was scary” she said.
This violent incident highlights ongoing safety concerns in Aviary Hill and underscores the importance of rapid response and security measures. Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant, particularly when travelling with children, and to report suspicious activity immediately.
It should be noted that this is the second serious attack in less than a week. This follows a house robbery in Hutten Heights, during which a man entered an elderly woman’s home, struck her over the head, bound and gagged her, and then stole valuables.
Taking the seriousness of the matter into account, Newcastillian News reached out to the SAPS to understand how they intend to address rising concerns about safety in Newcastle. However, no comment was forthcoming at the time of publication.
The incident in Aviary Hill serves as a stark reminder of the persistent risks faced by residents, particularly families, even during routine. It underscores the urgent need for heightened vigilance, both at the personal level and within the community, to prevent similar attacks and to protect locals.
Rapid response measures and accessible security services remain critical in mitigating such threats and restoring a sense of safety among residents.

Moreover, the recurrence of violent incidents in Newcastle highlights a broader challenge for local authorities and law enforcement. Effective strategies, including proactive patrolling and prompt investigation of reported crimes, are essential to address rising concerns and reassure the public.
