Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA and a figure widely recognised for his outspoken defence of free speech, was assassinated on Wednesday, 10 September 2025, while addressing thousands of attendees at Utah Valley University.
Kirk was participating in a live question-and-answer session as part of the organisation’s American Comeback Tour when he was struck in the neck by a single rifle shot fired from a distance.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene as he collapsed on stage, with video footage of the moment spreading rapidly across social media. Despite being rushed to hospital, sadly, Kirk was later pronounced dead.
U.S. President Donald Trump, a close ally of Kirk’s, confirmed the death in a Truth Social post, describing him as “the great, and even legendary, Charlie Kirk” and ordering U.S. flags to fly at half-staff until 15 September. Trump later released a video from the Oval Office, calling the killing a “heinous assassination” and a “dark moment for America.”
Moreover, Utah Governor Spencer Cox called the shooting a “political assassination” and emphasised that Kirk was “first and foremost, a husband and a dad to young children.” The FBI has launched a manhunt for the gunman, who is believed to have fired from an elevated position.
International leaders also weighed in. Former U.S. President Barack Obama condemned the violence as “despicable,” while UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer called it “heartbreaking.” Tributes came in from Australia, Israel, and across the political spectrum. South Africa’s Faf du Plessis even expressed his shock online, joining the millions around the world who reacted with disbelief.
Remembering Charlie Kirk
While opinions about Kirk were often polarised, even his critics acknowledged his relentless drive to push debate into the public square.
Furthermre, supporters describe him as a man who continually sought to inject logic and constructive conversation into political discourse, challenging audiences to think critically, whether they agreed with him or not.
Turning Point USA, the organisation he founded, described his passing as a moment of “heavy hearts,” asking for prayers for his wife and young children.
A Rising Tide of Political Violence
Kirk’s assassination comes against the backdrop of a worrying rise in political violence in the United States. It follows the 2024 assassination attempts on President Donald Trump and the June 2025 murder of a Minnesota lawmaker and her husband. The FBI has since warned of mounting threats from politically motivated extremists.
As tributes continue to pour in, the world reflects not only on the loss of a man who championed free speech and open debate, but also on the sorrow faced by his wife and two young children as they bid him farewell.
