Newcastle law enforcement successfully intercepted a copper theft haul valued at an estimated R1 million, after 20 men allegedly stormed Transnet in the early hours of Monday morning, 8 September 2025.
According to police reports, and confirmed by Newcastle SAPS spokesperson Lizzy Arumugam, at approximately 1:30am, the group arrived at Transnet’s security room and cut the lock and chain on the main door.
They then reportedly attacked the OPS commander on duty, holding him at gunpoint and disarming him of his 9mm pistol, before proceeding to steal a substantial quantity of copper cable.

A night security official witnessed the incident and quickly alerted his superiors, who then notified Newcastle SAPS.
Officers pursued the suspects’ truck along the Newcastle/Madadeni Road, successfully intercepting the vehicle. The driver was taken into custody, while the OPS commander received medical attention for his injuries before being transported to hospital.
While one suspect is now in custody, Arumugam said, “Further police investigations into the matter are now underway.” This high-value copper heist highlights growing concerns over metal theft and security breaches at industrial facilities in Newcastle.
Law enforcement authorities have emphasised the importance of rapid response and vigilance to prevent similar incidents, as organised metal theft operations continue to threaten local businesses and infrastructure.

Residents are urged to report any persons involved with such criminal activity. What are you thoughts on this? Let us know below.
