Furthermore, as stated by Imran Ghafoor of the Amajuba Crime Fighters Task Team (CCPA), on 5 July 2025, the individuals allegedly breached an electronic and cellular establishment in Dannhauser, KwaZulu-Natal.

“During the burglary, the suspects stole a large number of electronic devices and cellphones valued between R300 000 and R400 000,” Ghafoor stated.

Subsequently, and as corroborated by Amajuba District SAPS spokesperson Nonjabulo Langa, law enforcement initiated investigations into the incident. These enquiries led to the local SAPS, in conjunction with the Amajuba Crime Fighters Task Team and a local security firm, conducting a planned sting operation to locate the culprits.

Moreover, according to information verified by Langa, the investigations guided the team to Madadeni, where, on 17 July 2025, they successfully apprehended a suspect in possession of an undisclosed quantity of the merchandise purportedly pilfered from the store.

Following this initial arrest, law enforcement managed to track down another suspect in Siyahlahla, where additional stolen goods were discovered.

Regarding this arrest, which occurred on Saturday, 19 July 2025, Ghafoor elaborated, “After the suspects were questioned, law enforcement was able to secure further information on two more suspects. The team then proceeded to a business on Voortrekker Street where two foreign nationals were placed under arrest and stolen property worth +R220 000.00 was seized and recovered

Additionally, Langa confirmed that a vehicle used in the transportation of the stolen property and the suspects was also impounded during the operation. With the four suspects now in custody, Arumugam underscored that ongoing police investigations into the matter would be conducted to ascertain the full scope of their involvement in the crime.

As further investigations are now underway, the successful apprehension of these four individuals marks a breakthrough in tackling organised crime within KwaZulu-Natal, a province that consistently features among the country’s crime hotspots.

The incident underscores the growing complexity of crimes targeting high-value electronics, particularly cellphones, which are increasingly exploited for cyber fraud and financial data theft. As South Africa grapples with this evolving threat, the need for enhanced cybersecurity and public awareness becomes paramount especailly when considering that South Africa is one of the top rated countries for cybercrime.
