Key Summary Points:
- Trial Nears as Patel Rejects Plea:
- Attorney Exit Shifts Case Dynamics:
- Community Lifts Mothilal Family:
The case against Mohamed Patel, accused of murdering his longtime friend Jonah Mothilal, progressed at the Newcastle Magistrate Court on Tuesday, 25 February 2025.

The Mothilal family continues their determined effort to seek justice for Jonah’s tragic death.
Seven months after the crime took place, the legal proceedings have gained momentum, with the family now awaiting the start of the formal trial. Speaking with Newcastillian News, Jonah’s father, Pastor Sam Mothilal, clarified that Tuesday’s court appearance laid the groundwork for the upcoming trial. “Patel was offered a plea bargain, but he did not accept it. I think, by taking the plea bargain, he would have to accept the responsibility for killing his childhood friend,” he explained.
In a significant update, Patel’s attorney, Zubair Chothia, has formally withdrawn from the case.
When contacted for comment, Chothia was unable to provide insight into his reasons for stepping away from representing Patel in this murder case, leaving the circumstances of his departure undisclosed. Nevertheless, it has been verified that Patel has secured new legal counsel to represent him at his upcoming court appearance.
Addressing this change, Pastor Mothilal noted that the appointment of new attorneys has shifted the case timeline to 12 March 2025.
“The case is currently rounding up. However, we are hoping that with the evidence showing against him, we will be able to see the case move forward in March once his new attorney has been filled in on the case and the work which has already been done,” he stated, expressing measured hope for progress.
Reflecting on the seven months since Jonah’s death and the ensuing legal efforts, Pastor Mothilal shared appreciation for community support. “My family has received immense support and prayers from the local community, and we highly appreciate the fact that so many people are holding us in their prayers and thoughts,” he said..
With the case scheduled to continue in March 2025, it’s worth recalling that Jonah was killed on 8 July 2024, after travelling with Patel to Johannesburg to buy a motor vehicle.
The purchase never occurred, and on their return trip, Patel allegedly shot Jonah in the back of the head, ending a friendship that dated back to childhood. Authorities discovered Jonah’s body on 9 July 2024.

We have confidence in the law and JUSTICE must be served to the guilty. It is so profoundly evident that vile acts of intended sin was committed. hopefully this
case ends soon.
