- Deadline Extended for Card Transition: The deadline to switch from the SASSA Gold Card to the new Postbank Black Card has been moved from 28 February 2025 to 20 March 2025, offering more time for over 28 million South Africans to adapt to this crucial change without the rush.
- Comprehensive Support for a Smooth Transition: With intensified efforts from both SASSA and Postbank, including expanded collection points and mobile units in remote areas, the process is designed to be as accessible and efficient as possible. .
- Step-by-Step Guide to Your New Card: This guide simplifies the process into clear, actionable steps: from locating your nearest collection point through a USSD code, preparing your documents, to activating and securing your new card, ensuring you’re fully prepared for the transition.

More than 28 million South Africans depend on the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) for their monthly grants, yet the shift from the familiar SASSA Gold Card to the new Postbank Black Card has left many beneficiaries grappling with uncertainty about the process.
With this significant change rolling out across the nation, the time has come to clarify the steps and alleviate the confusion.
Originally set for completion by 28 February 2025, the transition deadline has now been extended to 20 March 2025 by Ministers Solly Malatsi and Nokuzola Tolashe. This extension is designed to provide ample time for beneficiaries to understand and navigate this new system, ensuring a smoother transition for all involved.
To ensure this shift is managed with the utmost efficiency, both departments, together with their agencies, are intensifying their efforts. They’re bolstering manpower and collaborating with major retailers to expand the network of collection points throughout South Africa. Mobile units are also being dispatched to remote areas to guarantee that this change reaches every corner of the country. As this pivotal deadline nears, it marks a significant evolution for South Africa’s social grant recipients.
The SASSA Gold Card, once managed by Grindrod Bank, is making way for the Postbank Black Card, which aims to enhance security, streamline processes, and ensure efficient access for over 28 million South Africans.
The new card not only promises superior security features but also retains all the benefits of its predecessor, including free replacements and transactions.
Taking the above into consideration, here’s a comprehensive guide to help you navigate this essential transition:
How to Replace Your SASSA Card:
- Locate Your Nearest Collection Point:
- Dial 120218*3# on your mobile to pinpoint the nearest location. This USSD service will guide you through selecting your province and area for a precise list of collection points.
- Alternatively, consult the Postbank or SASSA websites by clicking here
- Gather Your Documents:
- Your valid South African ID or temporary ID is required.
- If collecting on behalf of someone else, bring your ID along with an official SASSA proxy letter. Click here for the letter
- Asylum seekers should present their SASSA approval letter.
- Visit Your Collection Point:
- Identity Verification:
- Your ID will be checked for authenticity, possibly including biometric verification.
- For proxy collection, you’ll need to show both your ID and the proxy letter.
- Hand Over Your Old Card:
- If you still have your SASSA Gold Card, it’s time to surrender it; if not, inform the staff.
- Receive Your New Card:
- You’ll be given your new Postbank Black Card immediately.
- Activate Your New Card:
- Activate your card on the spot. Set or reset your PIN as needed. If issues arise, immediate help or a call to Postbank can sort them out.
- Test Your Card:
- Make a small transaction or withdrawal to ensure everything works as expected.
- Secure Your Card:
- Guard your PIN closely. Be vigilant against fraud, never share card details, and be wary of suspicious requests.
If community members find themselves continuing to struggle with the process, you can contact the following numbers for support:
- Postbank: 0800 53 54 55
- SASSA: 0800 60 10 11
UPDATE: 20 February 2025

Switching to Bank Account Payments:
- Head to your nearest SASSA office to begin the transition process.
- Bring along:
- A bank statement, stamped and no older than three months.
- Proof of account ownership.
- Your South African ID.
- Await processing, which typically takes 4-6 weeks.
- Enjoy the convenience of receiving your grants directly into your bank account.
Home Visit Arrangement for Black Card Upgrades
If mobility challenges or health issues prevent you from visiting a SASSA office, you can request a home visit for your black card upgrade. Contact the SASSA hotline at 0800 60 10 11, describe your situation, and if necessary, substantiate your request with a medical certificate.
Key Considerations for Home Visits:
- Direct Communication: Reach out to SASSA directly to schedule your home visit.
- Clarity in Communication: Explain your medical or mobility constraints thoroughly.
- Documentation: Have a doctor’s note or similar documentation ready to validate your need for a home visit.
This tailored approach ensures that all SASSA beneficiaries, regardless of their physical capabilities, can access their benefits with dignity and ease.

This transition goes beyond administrative changes; it’s a leap towards enhanced security and streamlined access to grants for millions. South Africans relying on SASSA for their grants should act now to renew their cards, circumventing any potential disruptions once the old system is phased out.

Should people who have their money get paid straight into their bank account, be aware of any changes on their sassa. Should they renew their application to have it paid into their banks.

I prefer my grant being paid into my bank account. So I can’t see the necessity of having the Black card. Please give me directions

We can’t get any Sassa office on their phones to come and assist us at our home to change our SASSA cards to the black ones. We stay in Duncanville Vereeniging.
Can you do the change online
Is it possible to do the change online
Shocking as people who had their grants paid into their bank accounts were told to get this gold card and now a few years later we are doing this again
Gold cards have a 2027 expiry date so what is Sassa up to constantly changing and causing chaos for everyone.
Should people who have their money get paid straight into their bank account, be aware of any changes on their sassa. Should they renew their application to have it paid into their banks.

Good day, please see the updated information in the article.
When you dial the code 120218*3# IT SAYS IT IS NOT ON THE NETWORK
Good day, that is the number provided by SASSA. They are more than likely dealing with an influx of people contacting the number. Alternatively, you can call Postbank at 0800 53 54 55 or SASSA at 0800 60 10 11
Tried all 3 none work.
Elizabeth
NONE of the phone numbers you supplied work or are just not answered…or you are told “we are experiencing high call volume” & you wait & wait & wait!!!!
Good day, please see the updated information in the article.
This is alot of rubbish forcing 28 million to bet signed up in such a short time. Clearly there is no thought gone into the logistics.
No toilets
No water
No chairs
Nothing
Only 2 staff.members per station.
Look at elections how many people are involved
Changing to the Black postbank card is not that easy, I was there already 4 times from 5h00 in the morning spent hours there waiting just to be sent home. Then they are off-line, then there is no black cards and then they only take 100 or 150 people a day. I have got big back problems I can’t stand in long lines for hours, my back don’t allow me! Can the people of postbank and sassa please come up with a decent solution to help the millions of people that are trying their best to get the Black postbank cards PLEASE, PLEASE!!!!!!!!

I wish they allowed the use of a Passport for identification. Now I still have to apply for an ID.I don’t know how long that’s goi g to take. With the use of biometrics I don’t know why they don’t accept Passports.
Hi, please can you provide me with the link to the “proxy letter”.
My 89 year old mum is unable to sit or stand in Ling ques.
Thank you
Good day, please see the updated information in the article.
Apparently PnP can only process 200 cards a day! So you have to arrive at 4am to get in the line?!? How are the elderly supposed to make this happen before 20 March?
SASSA should allow people to change to receive funds to bank accounts online, you can upload a photo holding your ID to verify identity and upload all other documents, would alleviate alot of the chaos out there. We were at SASSA the other day, thousands of people and the system had crashed, its impossible!
What happens if you lost your ID card
What happens if you dont have any fingerprints
Where in Somerset West can I go for my black sassa card???
This whole procedure is an absolute shamble, the ANC and its consorts should be so ashamed, this people couldn’t organise a piss up in a Brewery , just as they have ruined this country since 1994
Ussd that was provided is not even working, how else can one check nearest collection point?
The 120 number to locate the site does not work, the link for getting the proxy letter does not work. Did you forget who we are dealing with here?
when reading the comments you realise just how stupid this deadline is for so many people to go. So if we do not make the 200 people a day we go home and come back the next day11 How does my mum get to a site every day with no one to help her but me. Do i need to keep taking days off work to go to a collection site? WHT with this planning. Why is roll out not atleast a year. How can you expect 28 million people to access cards over a period of 5 months
IF I GO TO SASSA TODAY WILL I BE ABLE TO GET MY MONEY
