The spirit of Christmas shone brightly in a heart-warming act of kindness, where a 74-year-old woman and her eight grandchildren, who had been living in dire conditions, were gifted a fully furnished four-bedroom home. This remarkable gesture transformed their lives and ensured their festive season would be one to cherish forever.

Reflecting on this uplifting moment, Amajuba District SAPS Spokesperson, Constable Nonjabulo Langa, recounted the event.
The handover was conducted by Amajuba District SAPS Commissioner, Major General Fred Alexander, and the CEO of the Nyatee Foundation, Boitumelo Hamu, on Monday, 9 December 2024.
Constable Langa detailed how the life of 74-year-old Sibongile Beauty Jiyane, affectionately known as Gogo Jiyane, took such an extraordinary turn. “As part of their social crime prevention duties, the Osizweni CPF were conducting patrols when they encountered an elderly woman, who introduced herself as Gogo Jiyane, walking barefoot during the harsh winter,” said Constable Langa.
Moved by her plight, the Osizweni CPF members offered to accompany her to her home in Inverness, Osizweni, as she explained she was returning from a shopping trip. Upon arriving at her residence, they discovered the heartbreaking reality of her living conditions. The poorly constructed house was in no state to shelter her and her eight grandchildren, aged between four and sixteen.
Recognising the urgency of the situation, the Osizweni CPF acted swiftly. In collaboration with the Amajuba District SAPS, the Nyatee Foundation, and local businesses, they worked tirelessly to provide Gogo Jiyane and her grandchildren with a safe and comfortable home.

Constable Langa emphasised that this initiative is part of a broader housing project aimed at improving living conditions in the community. She explained, “Inverness is known for its high volume of crimes such as assault GBH, theft, common assault, and house robberies, which disproportionately affect young people and the elderly. This made it a fitting location for such a transformative project.”
She further acknowledged the collective efforts of various stakeholders and sponsors, including the Nyatee Foundation, Al-Imdaad Foundation, the Office of the Premier, Eskom, the Department of Correctional Services, the Department of Social Development, the Department of Health, and the Amajuba District Women’s Network and Men for Change.

As the festive season approaches, the story of Gogo Jiyane and her grandchildren stands as a testament to the power of compassion and community. This early Christmas miracle is a reminder of the profound impact that unity and generosity can have on those in need.
