For years, the old Monte Vista Casino stood in disarray, a mere shadow of its former self. However, the facility began reviving after the Newcastle Municipality committed to transforming the facility into a state-of-the-art sporting hub.

As reported by Newcastillian News in March 2024, the Newcastle Municipality announced its ambitious plan to convert the Monte Vista Casino Sports Facility into a cutting-edge hub for sports and wellness.
Insights from the Newcastle Municipality’s Communications Unit at the time revealed that the revamped facility is designed to accommodate a wide range of sporting codes, fostering a culture of health and athleticism among Newcastle residents, particularly the youth.
Moreover, the Communications Unit emphasised that the facility’s revitalisation would benefit residents and significantly contribute to the development of young talent. Local schools will have access to the facility for hosting sports days and other activities. Fitness enthusiasts will enjoy the outdoor gym, while event organisers can utilise designated spaces within the facility for private functions, including year-end parties, weddings, tournaments, and social gatherings.

As the work steadily progresses at the grounds, the question now stands, how much work has the Newcastle Municipality achieved thus far?
Discussing the developments, the Newcastle Municipality’s Communications Unit explained, “The progress of the project is very satisfactory, and Phase 1(a) is almost complete, with the contractor currently addressing the snag list. The Municipality has appointed a new contractor to complete Phase 1(b), as the initially appointed contractor was terminated due to poor performance.”

Additionally, the Municipality’s Communications Unit highlighted that the following work has been completed, thus far:
- Parking rehabilitation.
- Guard houses.
- Construction of change rooms.
- BMX track area.
- Outdoor Indigenous games.
- Vending stalls.
- Completion of two x Combo courts, completion of seven-a-side court.
- Completion of Change room (Electrical works, plumbing and doors).
- Completion of platforms, and construction of walkways.
As per the municipal team, the remaining work for Phase 1(b) includes:
- Completion of hockey court.
- Completion of the cricket field.
- R Tennis court.
- Ruby field.
Regarding the anticipated completion of the facility, the Communications Unit pointed out, “The duration of this project spans over five years, with a projected completion date set for 2027. The successful realisation of this timeline depends on the consistent availability of financial resources from the project’s sponsors to support the implementation of Phases 2 through 5.”
Once all phases are complete, the Communications Unit noted that the Municipality would officially launch the project to the community.
