Drakensberg Primary School came alive with excitement on Saturday, 31 August 2024, as it hosted its highly anticipated annual Buitelug Fees. This event, a highlight on Newcastle’s social calendar, is known for its vibrant atmosphere and outstanding entertainment, and this year upheld that tradition.

With warm, sunny weather setting the scene, the day promised an unforgettable experience.
A wide variety of stalls catered to every guest’s needs, while the entertainment provided an afternoon of pure enjoyment. The performances featured energetic displays from the Drakies and Hutties Trompoppies, along with the rhythmic beats of Drakies Hip Hop. As the evening unfolded, local band Smokkelhuiz took the stage, followed by national singing stars Nadine and Deon Groot, who captivated the audience with their remarkable performances.
“The highlights of the day included the entertainment, with the singers performing and the different schools who participated in the entertainment. There were also more stalls than the previous year and the different activities held on the day also contributed to the day’s success.”
Among the day’s many highlights, one of the most thrilling moments was undoubtedly the epic rugby showdown between South Africa and New Zealand. The crowd erupted in cheers as the Springboks clinched a thrilling victory, defeating the All Blacks 31 – 27, adding an extra layer of excitement to an already exhilarating event.
























With the day hosting numerous local businesses and a sea of smiling faces, Deputy Principal Phillip Smit expressed his delight at the event’s success.
Smit also extended his heartfelt gratitude to all who contributed to the event, particularly the guests and those who set up tents and invited additional guests, enhancing the overall festive spirit of the Buitelug Fees.
