Escaped convict recaptured and returned to custody

Dumisani Mthethwa, the convict who made headlines for escaping from Waterval Correctional Centre, has been successfully recaptured and returned to custody.

Newcastillian News reported on Wednesday morning, 28 August 2024, that Mthethwa made his daring escape from the Utrecht-based correctional facility on Monday, 26 August 2024.

It was explained that Mthethwa was part of the span assigned to work in the facility’s garden, and the circumstances surrounding his escape were under investigation. It was further noted that he was sentenced on 20 March 2019, and was serving 15 years for robbery with aggravating circumstances.

However, the Department of Correctional Services confirmed that Mthethwa was apprehended on Wednesday morning. “The apprehension was successfully executed through the relentless efforts of our departmental officials. Dumisani Mthethwa is scheduled to appear in court on charges related to his escape. Additionally, his security classification will be reviewed, and he will be transferred to a different correctional facility to ensure heightened security measures,” the Department stated.

Emphasising the importance of safety and security, the Department of Correctional Services reiterated its commitment to preventing breaches.

“We are taking all necessary measures to avert security breaches. Hence, the department remains steadfast in its mission to apprehend those who escape from custody. Escaping from lawful custody is a serious criminal offence, and those who aid in such acts shall be spared no mercy,” the Department added.
