An inmate from Waterval Correctional Centre in Utrecht, identified as Dumisani Mthethwa, has escaped from prison and is currently on the run. The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) spokesperson, Singabakho Nxumalo, confirmed the escape on Tuesday, 27 August 2024, stating that Mthethwa managed to flee from the facility on Monday, 26 August 2024.

“Mthethwa was part of the span assigned to work in the facility’s garden, and the circumstances surrounding his escape are under investigation. Sentenced on 20 March 2019, Dumisani Mthethwa is serving 15 years for robbery with aggravating circumstances,” said Nxumalo.
Nxumalo further mentioned that a detailed enquiry has been launched to determine whether there were any potential lapses in security protocols. “DCS is working closely with other law enforcement agencies to apprehend offender Mthethwa and return him to custody as swiftly as possible,” added Nxumalo.
Furthermore, the DCS strongly urged the public not to approach Mthethwa if seen but to report any sightings or relevant information to the nearest correctional centre or police station.

Aren’t inmates serving time in a facility like Waterval supposed to be guarded closely???? Especially when they working outside of the premises which is the only way one can escape as Waterval is tight with security within the boundaries of the facility, if he had being working behind the high boundary fencing and gates, there was no way he could escape, this is total neglect from wardens on duty supposed to be doing their job however allowed a inmate to escape unseen, think about the inmates wear bright orange uniform, you want to tell me no one saw a person walking or running in the area wearing an orange uniform or was there a planned vehicle waiting somewhere for the escapee. Now due to neglance of security there is a criminal on the run that has a record for robbery and possibly violent as well.
