Newcastle SAPS arrested two parents after it was discovered that the couple had thrown their newborn baby into the river by Amcor Dam on Umfolozi Street, Ncandu Park.
On Sunday, 25 August 2024, employees at a local factory noticed that a colleague who had been heavily pregnant no longer showed any signs of pregnancy
According to police reports, which have been confirmed by Newcastle SAPS Spokesperson Lizzy Arumugam, the concerned factory workers began questioning the mother and father, who also worked at the factory, about their child. Their persistent inquiries led the couple to admit the unthinkable truth.
The woman confessed that she had given birth while her husband had gone into town to borrow money so he could take her to the hospital. However, upon his return, they claimed that the child had been born and was already dead, allegedly stillborn. Moreover, they revealed to their colleagues that they had wrapped their baby boy in a blanket and had disposed of his lifeless body in the river at the Amcor Dam wall.
The factory workers, shocked and horrified, took the couple to the scene, and the Newcastle SAPS were immediately contacted to assist in recovering the infant’s body.
Officials on the scene located and removed the child’s body from the river, bringing a heartbreaking end to the search.
Both parents, who are Lesotho nationals, were arrested and detained by Newcastle SAPS. Arumugam confirmed that further police investigations into the matter are now underway, with a case of concealment of birth being opened against the couple.

Both parents need to be sterilized; they don’t deserve to bring kids into life. They will be useless parents.
Deport everyone that was not born in South Africa. They should go back where they came from.
Humans are the only mammals who will abandon and dispose of their young.
Pathetic.
