The incident occurred on Thursday, 6 June 2024, when two students from different schools engaged in a heated argument on a school transport vehicle heading from Madadeni to Newcastle.

According to an official police source, during the argument, one child pulled out a knife and stabbed the other student.

While the victim did not sustain serious injuries, the police source stated that the conflict did not end there and flared up again at the end of the school day. The two teenagers escalated the fight, involving other students from their respective schools, both located in the Newcastle CBD.

Newcastle Crime Fighters’ Imran Ghafoor explained that after school, a large group of students was seen making their way through Voortrekker Road, ready to continue the fight. “Some of the children were seen armed with belts and sticks, while others were seen with knives,” Ghafoor reported.

Law enforcement received information about the fight and responded immediately, with traffic officials, police officers, and Newcastle Crime Fighters giving chase through the CBD.

While the youths managed to escape initially, Newcastle SAPS’s Constable Madelein Holloway went to their schools and arrested two of the teenagers for the assault and stabbing.

Furthermore, Newcastle SAPS spokesperson Lizzy Arumugam confirmed the incident, highlighting that the police are currently conducting further investigations into the matter

As the investigation continues, Ghafoor noted the unfortunate nature of such incidents happening in town. “At one stage, one only heard of this happening more in the townships, but it seems to have now come to Newcastle,” he remarked.

These students must firstly be expelled from school, because they are endangering other innocent students and have a bad influence on their fellow students. They can learn at home for the rest of the term

Furthermore the parents are their mirrors as they see and hear them talk, behave, arguing and fisically attacking each other

  2. SS says:

They see this kind of behavior in the townships, too many gangs and the so called forum wandering around the areas beating people, so in their eyes this is acceptable. Their parents also turn a blind eye to what their children are exposed too. Basically very few people are displicined in today’s times. If one of my sons had to behavior like this and be arrested I would gladly whip the backsides in front of the police. Children need to be smacked and punished for their deeds. The two arrested will go to court, if found guilty will probably end up in the correctional youth centre, where they will be educated, walk out there once the rehabilitated, and probably commit more crimes as adults.
