The decision followed a special council meeting held by the Newcastle Municipality on Thursday morning, 28 March 2024.

According to the Special Council Meeting’s agenda, a motion of no confidence in Cllr Thwala was submitted for the Newcastle Municipal Council to vote upon. However, the local Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) were not in attendance, thereby preventing the council from officially tabling the motion.

Nonetheless, two local councillors confirmed that a resolution was taken to remove Cllr Thwala as Deputy Mayor, replacing him with a representative from his political party, Team Sugar South Africa (TSSA).

While the councillors stated that Cllr Thwala was removed from his seat as Deputy Mayor, he was jointly removed from the Executive Committee.

“The decision was made, as Cllr Thwala has been absent from meetings,” pointed out one of the councillors, who opted to remain anonymous at this point in time.

Newcastillian News reached out to Cllr Thwala to gather his view on the situation. Unfortunately, he noted that he could not provide an official comment at the time of publication.

He did, however, highlight that he had not attended the strategic planning meeting or the special council meeting, as he had opted to remain in Newcastle for work. Due to this, he explained that until the Municipality provided him with the full details of its decision, he would be unable to comment.

  1. Took them time to see that. Feel he was supposed to be removed from long before he knocked someone while spinning a car at a show here in Newcastle

    1. He did not wake up that morning with the intention to knock someone with his car!! Try something else.
