The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) has clinched three highly contested wards in Newcastle, KZN from the African National Congress (ANC), marking a political shift ahead of the National and Provincial elections.

The victory came in the wake of the by-elections held on Wednesday, 13 March 2024, in Ward 12, Ward 19, and Ward 23.
In Ward 12, the IFP garnered 1,973 votes, dwarfing the ANC’s 763 votes, the EFF’s 94 votes, and TSSA’s 256 votes. Similarly, in Ward 19, the IFP secured 1,566 votes, surpassing the ANC’s 732 votes, the EFF’s 65 votes, and TSSA’s 137 votes. Ward 23 witnessed the IFP securing 1,498 votes, while the ANC trailed with 315 votes, the EFF with 0 votes, and TSSA with 213 votes.
Moreover, the IFP KwaZulu-Natal Chairperson and Premier Candidate, Cllr Thami Ntuli, expressed elation at the party’s triumph, stating, “These results again underscore the significant growing support for the IFP. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all our supporters, volunteers, and structures for their unwavering dedication to our party. In particular, the IFP would like to thank our provincial secretary, Xolani Dube, for his leadership during the campaign.”
While acknowledging the support received, Cllr Ntuli emphasised the IFP’s appreciation for the trust bestowed upon them by the people of Newcastle. He remarked, “We recognise and appreciate the immense responsibility placed upon us, and we are committed to serving our constituents with dedication and integrity.”
With an eye towards the Provincial and National General Elections, Cllr Ntuli highlighted that these victories in the by-elections have injected fresh vigour into the IFP. He reiterated the party’s dedication to effecting meaningful change for the people of KwaZulu-Natal.

“We are energised and determined to build on this momentum as we continue toward our goal of rebuilding KwaZulu-Natal and South Africa. We call upon our newly elected councillors to emulate the exemplary leadership of Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, serving the people with dedication, honesty, and humility,” affirmed Cllr Ntuli.

IFP or ANC it doesnt matter, both havent done anything for Newcastle. Our town is in the state of ruins, Mayor and co. are corrupt. Building a useless sport statium for millions when that money can be used to better the infrastructure of this town, create jobs or fix the power issue.
