Newcastillian News reported on Monday how Lennoxton residents were brutally assaulted with a panga during a home robbery. However, Newcastle Crime Fighter Task Team’s Imran Ghafoor explained that the crime was more brutal than police sources initially stated.

Ghafoor explained that the perpetrator had entered the Lennoxton resident’s premises at 5:30 pm on Friday, 16 February 2024. However, what started as a house robbery took a savage turn when the suspect savagely attacked the man and his wife with a panga, The couple sustained multiple injuries, with the husband bearing the brunt of the assault, suffering severe wounds to his head and body. Both victims, covered in blood and in a state of shock, were rushed to the hospital.

After the attack, Ghafoor pointed out that the suspect fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash and the victims’ cellphones. However, his escape was short-lived with law enforcement determined to bring him to book and ensure he was unable to carry out another criminal attack.

As a result, Ghafoor explained that the Newcastle Crime Fighter Task Team received crucial information about the suspect’s whereabouts on Monday afternoon, 19 February 2024.

Subsequently, the suspect’s safe house in the Blaauwbosch area was identified and extensively monitored by the operational team, which included the Newcastle Crime Fighter Task Team, Newcastle CSC, and the Stabilisation Unit from the SAPS.

With confirmed information about the suspect and his identity, the team apprehended the individual, recovering the weapon used in the attack. Imran Ghafoor confirmed that charges of attempted murder and robbery have been brought against the suspect and further investigations will be conducted to determine if the suspect is linked to additional crimes.

Reflecting on the case, Ghafoor urged the community not to confront armed criminals directly. He emphasised the importance of prioritising personal safety, stating, “If you see a suspect is armed, it is advisable to do as they say and give them what they want. Your property can always be recovered and replaced, but you cannot replace a life.”

With another criminal off of Newcastle’s streets, a special thanks goes out to the collaborative effort between the Newcastle Crime Fighter Task Team, the Newcastle SAPS Stabilisation Unit, and the Newcastle SAPS Community Service Centre (CSC).
