In celebrating Women’s Day, on Wednesday, 9 August 2023, the spirit of unity and togetherness was palpable at the Newcastle Bowls Club.

In a delightful display of camaraderie, several male members of the club decided to dress in women’s clothing as they joined their female counterparts on the greens, creating a festive atmosphere filled with laughter and celebration.
Marius Bothma from the Newcastle Bowls Club, shed light on the unique gesture, explaining the purpose of the men donning female attire as a form of celebrating Women’s Day with a light hearted touch.
Bothma further elaborated on the significance of the event, saying, “The bowls day is about celebrating Women’s Day, putting ourselves in their shoes, and having a good day. Women are the building bricks of society, and this was our way of celebrating them.”
As the sun graced the greens, the male members played their rounds of bowls while adorned in an array of feminine outfits. Their colourful and spirited attires added a whimsical touch to the day’s proceedings, sparking laughter and enjoyment amongst both participants and spectators alike.
The presence of female players alongside their male counterparts further contributed to an atmosphere of friendship and celebration, underscoring the importance of unity in recognising the contributions of women to society.
The event not only commemorated Women’s Day but also conveyed a deeper message of empathy and understanding. By stepping into women’s shoes—albeit figuratively—the male participants aimed to honour and appreciate the pivotal role that women play in all facets of life. The cheerful spirit of the day served as a reminder that acknowledging and celebrating the achievements of women is essential for a progressive and harmonious society.
As the joyful event unfolded, participants and attendees alike were reminded of the significance of Women’s Day and the need to continue striving for gender equality and empowerment.
