Newcastle hosted over 200 wrestlers for SA President championships

The South African President Championships took place in Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal with over 200 wrestlers from across the country competing.

This follows the Newcastle Cougars Wrestling Club hosting the South African President Championships, on behalf of the KZN Wrestling Federation.

The event took place at the Newcastle Show Hall from Friday, 31 March 2023, to Saturday, 1 April 2023, the atmosphere was wrought with a competitive spirit. Wrestling Associations from KZN, Free State, North Gauteng, Sedibeng, Western Province, Ekurhuleni, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, East Gauteng, and North Gauteng.

The tournament began with the President Freestyle Category. This division was divided into two groups, namely the U/8 to U/13 division and the U/15 to U/20 division.

In the President Freestyle Category, KZN entered 15 wrestlers, three of which hailed from Newcastle, namely Juan Louis Horn, Byron Botha, and Ricardo Giammello.

By the end of the day, KZN had proved its worth by securing one gold medal, two silver medals, and a bronze medal. It should be noted, that Newcastle’s Ricardo Giammello won one of the two silver medals on the day.

On Saturday, 1 April 2023, wrestlers participated in the Greco Roman Division, which was divided into the ages of U/13 to U/20. KZN entered eight Greco Roman Wrestlers, of which two were from Newcastle, namely, Byron Botha and Ricardo Giammello.

The province received five medals, namely two gold, two silver, and one bronze. Ricardo Giammello secured the bronze medal.

Female wrestlers also took to the mats on Saturday and were divided into two groups, namely Schools Female and Juniors Female. KZN entered 10 female wrestlers and received eight medals, which were three gold, three silver, and two bronze.
