Up and till recently, Newcastillians had to travel long distances to receive oncology treatment.
However, working to assist the communities under their care and bringing this vital service to the region, Mediclinic Newcastle now welcomes Radiation Oncologist, Dr Nkanyiso Zwane to their already impressive roster.
Officially commencing his duties on 1 February 2023, Dr Zwane explained that he was setting up his clinic at the Kintsugi Wellness Centre— a convenient location for patients.
Introducing himself to the Newcastillian community, Dr Zwane explained that he initially pursued a career in medicine thanks to his parents.
“Both my parents were doctors and I followed in their footsteps. I love what I do, and I believe this is what I was meant to do. I completed my undergrad at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, before completing my post grad at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital in 2014.”
Following working as a GP, Dr Zwane decided to pursue a speciality, choosing a field that would challenge him and one in great need.
“I had a personal criteria in place for the speciality that I wanted to pursue. It had to be something where I knew there was a need. Something that was very uncommon, and the selected speciality had to be something I didn’t know anything about,” he began.
After selecting oncology, he completed his post grad and set off on a path that would see him successfully assisting numerous people in their fight against cancer.
Initially from Durban, KZN and the founder of the Sina Oncology Cancer Clinic, Dr Zwane stated that he decided to offer his services in Newcastle after two recent experiences.
“I saw a patient from Newcastle that I knew received treatment in Nelspruit. When I asked why they were receiving treatment so far from home, she explained there was no oncology treatment in Newcastle. A few weeks later, I was contacted by local surgeons for assistance with two patients, and they told me the same thing,” said Dr Zwane.
He then travelled to Newcastle on 25 January 2023 to conduct a visit and meet with Mediclinic Newcastle’s management team.
After the meeting and seeing the dire need for his services within the region, Dr Zwane made the necessary arrangements with the private hospital to bring oncology to Northern KwaZulu-Natal residents.
According to Dr Zwane, he will at first travel to Newcastle every fortnight. “I will then start coming weekly and if the need arises, I will run the clinic from Monday to Monday.”
Moreover, when explaining his offering, Dr Zwane said that as a radiation oncologist, he offers both radiation treatment and chemotherapy.
Dr Zwane further assured local patients that he would be working closely with them, their doctors and their families. This would be to ensure they receive the necessary treatment and support during their fight against cancer.
“If one comes to me for cancer care, they will be in good hands and they will not have to travel for their treatment. Also, I believe fighting cancer is a team sport, which is why I work closely with my patients and their doctors.”
Touching on the treatment process, Dr Zwane urged Newcastillians to trust the process, study all their treatment options and keep their families involved.
With Mediclinic Newcastle now providing this highly valuable service to its patients, be sure to contact the private hospital or Dr Zwane for more information.

You are a welcome addition to Newcastle Oncology expertise
Why is the Department of Health not employing young doctors in the public service anymore? Sleepy Joe is attacking them. Where did the staff funding suddenly go? Has it been stolen?
I’m sure Dr Zwane would have loved to help DOH
