Ladysmith security guard found himself taking centre stage, after he went beyond the call of duty, helping a woman deliver her baby in the unlikeliest of places.

On Monday, 23 August 2022, a special ceremony was held in honour of Norman Lala from Mbube Security, who helped a woman successfully deliver her baby in Ladysmith’s Murchison Mall.

The event was hosted at the Ladysmith Town Hall with the uThukela District Municipality’s, Mayor’s wife, Ndlunkulu Shabala and high-ranking municipal officials in attendance. During the event, Shabala thanked Lala for his efforts and for going beyond the call of duty to help a woman in need.

Describing the events on the day, Hlengiwe Nkabinde, the mother who Lala assisted, explained that on 6 December 2021, she had gone to Murchison Mall, when she suddenly went into labour.

Despite having no medical training, Lala immediately jumped into action to help Nkabinde deliver her baby girl. “It was a very difficult time, because I thought I might lose my job if the child dies.”

Despite the fact that it was not his job to help her, Nkabinde enthusiastically thanked the kind-hearted security guard for rushing to her aid, and ensuring her little girl was born without any complications.

Looking at Lala’s act, Shabala urged security guards to never underestimate their jobs and encouraged them to take pride in what they did.

“To all the security guards, we know that we don’t thank you enough, but today we are proud and appreciate your work and stay humble”, she concluded.
