A shootout between police officers and would-be thieves on Saturday night, 15 January 2022, has resulted in one suspect being killed.

Lieutenant Colonel Nqobile Gwala, the SAPS spokesperson, explains that police officers from Amangwe and Estcourt acted on information on Saturday night regarding four suspects trying to steal cellphone tower batteries.

“When police approached the suspects, they were met by a hail of bullets and there was an exchange of gunfire. One of the suspects was fatally wounded and two were arrested. A pistol with three rounds of ammunition, two vehicles, an angle grinder and a crowbar were recovered from the suspects.”

Lieutenant Colonel Gwala notes that police are still on the lookout for the suspect who managed to flee the scene.

The two detained suspects will be appearing in the Estcourt Magistrate’s Court. They face charges of attempted murder, unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition, and tampering with the essential infrastructure.
