Apart from the endless frustration and loss to the country—Eskom‘s 13-year “Electricity crisis,” loadshedding, is now driving up South Africa’s already ludicrous crime rate.
Because power outages are expected to continue for the foreseeable future, the Institute for Security Studies (ISS), along with others, has warned that crime levels may rise to alarming levels due to criminals taking advantage of power outages.
Dr Johan Burger of the institute told the SABC that house and business robberies are already rising, and he fears that other criminal activities will follow suit.
Burger explained that loadshedding is another opportunity that criminals are already taking advantage of and will continue to do so. As Burger points out, these criminals work off of the load-shedding schedules to plan out jobs.
Another person concerned about the issues brought forward by loadshedding, Morne Potgieter of Ithemba Security, explains that “Loadshedding contributes to crime across the country and it is an easy opportunity for the criminal element to use this, as they know not a lot of people have the facilities or the finances to put in generators and so forth.”
With this in mind, Potgieter affirms that the Eskom issue is linked to increased house and business break-ins. Whereby he states, these forms of crime “have increased tremendously.”
As a highly experienced person in the field, he declares that petty theft is a problem during loadshedding where items are stolen from darkened premises.
However, Potgieter also mentions that a lack of backup systems on security cameras are a problem. As when something does happen, the footage is not available.
Concurring with our security expert, the always involved, Imran Ghafoor of the Newcastle Crime Fighting Task Team, says that due to widespread darkness in the suburbs and specific security cameras going offline during planned outages, crime is on the rise.
While most alarm systems have backup batteries, Imran explains that these batteries are not always in good condition and are unreliable. All of this, he states, is taken into account by criminals.
Continuing, he also points out that because there is no lighting during loadshedding hours, criminals no longer have to wait for an opportunity to sneak into a yard or make their escape.
“It’s very easy for them to do a house break-in when it’s dark.”
