Northern China’s authorities are presently reimposing lockdowns and other emergency measures in order to contain the spread of COVID-19. This comes as health officials issued a warning about a growing outbreak after China documented more than 100 cases in 11 provinces over the previous week.
Tens of thousands of individuals were formally placed under tight stay-at-home orders on Monday, 25 October 2021. Authorities are attempting to contain the spreading virus in the lead-up to the Beijing Winter Olympics.
In addition, Chinese officials have cancelled hundreds of flights, shuttered schools, and increased mass testing in an effort to contain the current COVID-19 epidemic.
During a news conference on Sunday, October 24, 2021, Mi Feng, a spokesperson for the National Health Commission (NHC), stated that there had been many dispersed local outbreaks in China since October 17. All of which are quickly building.
Keeping this in mind, Mi said that the risk of the virus spreading further is growing.
The virus’s revival comes after nearly 75% of China’s population has been completely vaccinated.
The epidemic was first discovered among a tour group of fully vaccinated elderly folks from Shangai on October 16, 2021. The elderly travellers carried the virus throughout the country’s northern regions. As a result, numerous unvaccinated people were exposed to the travellers.
According to Mi, 106 of the 133 recorded cases on Sunday were related to 13 tour groups.
Infections were detected in approximately a third of the provinces and regions of the country. All medium and high-risk zones are concentrated in Inner Mongolia, Gansu, Ningxia, Guizhou, and Beijing, it is stated.
Authorities are now banning travel agencies from organising cross-provincial tours in these regions.
Furthermore, the Chinese capital has tightened entrance restrictions, requiring visitors from areas where proven cases have occurred to submit a negative coronavirus test and undergo 14 days of health monitoring.
According to CNN, officials in Beijing are already using criminal detentions to punish citizens who allegedly violated Covid restrictions.
Despite having experienced fevers after returning from a Covid-infected tourist location in Inner Mongolia, two of them went out to dine and brought friends home for mahjong. Another two attempted to scale the gates of their gated neighbourhood.
