On Sunday morning, 5 September 2021, emergency personnel were met with pandemonium after a bus transporting over 70 churchgoers rolled while in transit.
Underberg Emergency Medical Services (UEMS) explained that the incident occurred at approximately 9.30 am on Coleford Road in Underberg’s Umzimkhulu River Lodge area.
UEMS said, “On arrival, UEMS crews found absolute chaos. A bus carrying churchgoers had lost control on a sharp bend and left the roadway, rolling down an embankment.”
The UEMS personnel immediately got to work treating 74 patients, including 14 children, who had sustained minor to severe injuries and required medical intervention.
Due to the number of patients in need, UEMS says, “A call was made to multiple other services for assistance and the transportation of the injured.” Responding to the call for help, several emergency medical services responded, some as far as Pietermaritzburg.

By 11:45 am, UEMS explained that all 74 patients were accounted for and transported to nearby hospitals for further medical care.
