About Abingdon Wine Estate

Abingdon, a family business is passionate about wine, about people, the friends it makes and sharing its produce with those who truly appreciate it. The history of the KwaZulu-Natal winelands dates back 16 years to 2004. Call it madness, or an act of genius, Ian Smorthwaite, a production engineer with no background in viticulture, together with his wife, Jane Smorthwaite, took a giant leap of faith and began a journey of pioneering wine on their farm in Lions River. Located in the rolling hills just beyond Howick, Abingdon Wine Estate is a unique pioneering estate which has positioned itself as a serious high altitude single vineyard boutique wine producer in KZN.

Situated at 1140m above sea level, the Estate has just under 4ha under vine and produces certified single vineyard estate wines from 100% Abingdon grapes. The cultivars planted are Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Viognier, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Nebbiolo & Tempranillo; the soils are Clovelly and Griffon and offer good drainage, which is most welcome, especially when rain shows itself in summer. Abingdon’s maiden vintage, a 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon/ Shiraz blend, was the first ever certified estate wine made in KwaZulu-Natal. Thereafter, the farm has seen the release and swift sales of well over 100 certified Estate wines to date all representing Lions River, KwaZulu-Natal Wine of Origin. Abingdon sells its wine cellar door from its popular tasting room (opened in August 2009. The tasting room was the recipient of the American Express Dining Awards South Africa’s Best Kept Secret in 2019. Abingdon wines have received accolades and awards both locally and abroad.
