In a move to improve the standard of living for low- and middle-income earners in the iLembe region, the KwaDukuza council, through the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Human Settlements, has further committed an amount of R19 million to improve the Rocky Park Integrated Development Project. This bid could see a significant improvement in the facility and more occupants being accommodated.
KwaDukuza Municipality, in 2013, entered into a major Housing delegation agreement with the Provincial Department of Human Settlements, following its accreditation as a high-capacity Municipality—giving it the mandate to carry out all housing programmes and projects at local levels, with funding from the department.
The Rocky Park Integrated Development housing scheme forms part of the National government’s undertaking to provide low-income earners with adequate and affordable human settlements, contributing towards the fifteen-year rental stock strategy implemented by the provincial Human settlements Department.
The development comprises of apartments in two-and three-story walk-ups, making up 776 housing units classified as Community Residential Units in terms of their design and capacity to cater to the needs of 773 households with different income levels and housing preferences. The project scope also includes the installation of internal infrastructure services and social-economic amenities.
The project is divided into three categories with nine schemes as follows: 73 Low-Income units, 350 Rental Stock and 350 Middle-Income Units. The R19 million funding being set aside will cover the construction work of two blocks under Scheme 8, Block 8E and 8F.
A total of 77% of the sites have been serviced at Scheme 9, comprising of 6 low-income units and 18 community residential units, which have been completed and handed over to the beneficiaries.
KwaDukuza Mayor Dolly Govender recently introduced a new contractor, Likhanyile Consulting Engineers, to the community of Rocky Park, where she highlighted job creation as an essential feature in this development.
The construction of scheme 8 is almost complete, and 36 community residential units have been successfully occupied.
The resumption of the project promises a better lifestyle for residents, with the provision of security, maintenance, and some built-in household appliances. In addition, the project will undoubtedly improve the lives of citizens who migrate to urban centres of KwaDukuza for employment and other urban economies.
