In a perfect world, children lead carefree lives where their innocence remains untainted by the evils of humanity. However, this is unfortunately not the case.
The Newcastle Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offence (FCS) Unit is currently investigating a case where a man raped his granddaughter in 2019. The child was only six-years-old at the time of the incident. According to the police unit, the heinous act took place in Madadeni while the child had been playing outside with her sister, who was 16 years old. The victim’s older sister then went inside their house, and when she returned outside, her little sister was gone.
When she called for her sibling, she heard the little girl screaming from a backroom on the property. Running to the room and storming inside, she was left in horror when she allegedly witnessed her grandfather lying on top of her little sister.
The teenager then allegedly ran to call her grandmother, who came out in time to see the elderly man leave the room with the child.
The FCS Unit explains the child was taken to hospital, where it was confirmed she had been sexually assaulted. However, despite there being an eyewitness and medical evidence, the case was initially not enrolled in court. This has now seen the FCS take the matter further, with the case now sitting in Pietermaritzburg with the Director of Public Prosecutors.
The unit which specialises in cases such as this claims they are now waiting for the DNA results to return to ensure justice prevails.
