The night of 15 June 2019 will forever be etched into patrons’ minds at Khazin’s Shisanyama and tavern in Madadeni, KwaZulu-Natal. What was meant to be an evening of enjoyment turned into a bloody affair after a barrage of gunshots were fired, leaving two dead and another injured.
Examining the matter, Madadeni Police spokesperson, Captain Mandlenkosi Nkosi, says the 53-year-old suspect, Khethani Richard Shange, has since been sentenced to 75 years imprisonment by the Madadeni High Court, for murder, attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition without a licence, after he pleaded guilty.
Looking back at the fatal incident, Captain Nkosi describes, “It is alleged that on 15 June 2019, at about 8 pm, three security guards (bouncers) were on duty at Khazin’s Shisanyama and tavern in Madadeni, when the accused came and demanded to enter the tavern.”
During this time, the police captain says there was some form of misunderstanding between the accused and the bouncers. This saw Shange return to his vehicle before returning to the business establishment with a firearm. He proceeded to start shooting, resulting in the death of two of the security guards. A third security guard was injured and rushed to Madadeni Hospital for treatment.
During the shooting, patrons started rushing out of the establishment, seeking escape. The suspect then proceeded to flee the scene on foot. However, Captain Nkosi explains the police were contacted, and Shange was arrested approximately 500 meters away from Khazin’s Shisanyama and tavern. He adds, “The firearm was confiscated, as well as ammunition. A murder case was reported at Madadeni Police Station for further investigation.”
The accused was granted bail but made several appearances in court. He then pleaded guilty on eight counts, which are as follows:
- Count 1: Murder
- Count 2: Murder
- Count 3: Attempted murder
- Count 4: Attempted murder
- Count 5: Attempted murder
- Count 6: Attempted murder
- Count 7: Possession of an unlicensed firearm
- Count 8: Possession of ammunition without a licence.
He was sentenced as follows:
- For Count 1, he was sentenced to 25 years.
- Count 2, he received a further 25 years.
- For Count 3, Shange was sentenced to 10 years.
- Counts 4.5,6 were taken as one for the purpose of sentencing, seeing him receive an additional 5 years.
- Count 7 saw the suspect receive a further 8 years.
- For Count 8, Shange received 2 years sentencing.
The suspect now faces 75 years behind bars and will serve time on all the counts concurrently. What are your thoughts? Do you feel justice has been served?

He will be out in a couple years time.. But the suffering of those families will not end as they have lost breadwinners while this animal will enjoy life in our prisons with all the benefits.. And now he can even get some love from the female warders like that other convict. Justice system in this country is only for convicts not victims. A sad state of affairs.. He should be hanged.
That the fair sentence to me. It lyk he got 2 life sentence for killing 2 security. Nd another life sentence for attempting murder. He will die inprison.
