The first day of Grade 1 is a significant moment for a child as it marks their academic career’s commencement. Celebrating the auspicious moment, Newcastle schools gave a warm welcome to their newest learners on Monday, 22 February 2021.
Ali Delport of Amajuba Combined School highlights this year was significantly different from previous years. “Due to the COVID-19 rules, teachers could not hug the children as we would normally. However, we went out of our way to make the children feel relaxed.”
Such was the warmness at Amajuba; Delport points out that only four children shed a tear on their first day. But this was short-lived, with the youngsters adapting quickly to their new surroundings and forming new friendships.
The principal of Arbor Park Primary, Jaco Luus, highlights that the school held two first days due to the pandemic. “We welcomed the children in two groups, where one group consisted of boys and the other girls.”
However, he smiles and explains such was the excitement, there was virtually no crying from the Grade 1s first day, and the children immediately began forging friendships.
At Drakensberg Primary School, the Grade 1 learners had the opportunity to ring the school bell as part of their welcoming ceremony. Taking part in the school tradition, the morning was one of smiles and laughter.
