With classrooms welcoming back our beloved learners, and sports fields eager to see players returning, Curro Mount Richmore Sports Director, Shaun Blignaut states the time has finally arrived for the various sporting codes to resume.

With this in mind, he affirms, “PE and sport for our learners must not just be physical exercises or sport. But rather, focus on developing physical fitness and the ability to perform and enjoy day-to-day physical activities with ease, resulting in preparing learners to be physically and mentally active, fit and healthy into adulthood.”

Delving into the psychological benefits of participating in sport Blignaut elaborates, “Exercise improves mental health by reducing anxiety, depression, and negative mood and by improving self-esteem and cognitive function. Exercise has also been found to alleviate symptoms such as low self-esteem and social withdrawal.”

Furthermore, he believes participation in activities plays an essential role in promoting team-awareness, discipline and self-confidence—in addition to physical and social well-being. Blignaut continues by saying, Mount Richmore’s sports’ programmes are also aimed at helping learners discover their inherent talents and broaden their exposure beyond their current reference framework.

With sports now been given the green light the Sports Director highlights, “There has been a massive growth in sport at Curro Mount Richmore, not only with the number of teams we could field but also with the competitive strength we compete at. We have also introduced a variety of new sporting codes for our learners, allowing them to focus on individual sports. We also have specialised coaches focusing on specific sporting codes, not only for extra-murals but also for our new sports specific PE programme.”

Currently, the following sport codes have resumed as stipulated from the BDE and Federations:

  • Cricket
  • Hockey
  • Netball
  • Rugby
  • Tennis
  • Golf
  • Mountain biking
  • Soccer
  • Chess
  • Swimming

Looking at the positive benefits for mind and body as listed by Shaun Blignaut, the Curro Mount Richmore Independent School family is excited to have sports get underway and learners enjoying the wide range of sporting opportunities the school provides.

As Curro Mount Richmore Independent School takes to the sports fields, be sure your child does not miss out on all we have to offer. All of which are aimed at ensuring our learners reach their full potential.
