It would appear felons are now targeting government entities. This follows a well-executed armed robbery at the Emadlangeni (Utrecht) Department of Social Development (DSD).
The DSD is the government department responsible for providing social development, protection, and welfare services. This sadly meant very little to a group of armed men, who entered the department’s offices at 2 pm on Monday, 18 January 2021.
SAPS Corporate Communications and Liaison Officer, Lizzy Arumugam elaborates, “A group of unknown men entered the DSD premises through the back entrance. They overpowered the security guards and tied them up with cable ties. They then moved from the guard’s house to the main building.”
In the main building, the security guards were forced to hand over the main office keys to the criminals. With an air of professionalism, the perpetrators forced the guards to take them to the manager’s office. The guards were kept in the manager’s office, under the watchful eye of one of the robbers, who kept them under control with a firearm.
The men escaped with a Nissan Bakkie NP300, registration number KZN 72873, a petrol card, laptops and computers with an estimated value of R121 300.
The suspects fled the scene without injuring any of the victims. Police investigations are currently underway. Anyone with information which can assist the Utrecht SAPS can contact Captain SB Hlatshwayo on 082 462 9848.
