An adverse effect of the curfew, which for the most part has not been considered by many, are the truck drivers travelling long hours through the night on empty, lonely roads—leaving them vulnerable if something were to happen.
Such an incident was witnessed on Tuesday evening, 12 January 2021, with a truck overturning in Ingogo, near the railway station. The incident took place at approximately 9.50 pm, but due to poor cellphone reception, the driver could not call for help immediately. It was only hours later at 3.30 am that emergency personnel responded after the driver eventually managed to contact them.
While poor mobile network connectivity contributed immensely to the delay in assistance, it is speculated the current curfew also played a primary role, as no other vehicles were travelling along the road at the time.
Fortunately, the truck driver only sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital by ambulance services for treatment. With sources on the scene stating the driver claimed the road was wet and slippery, causing his truck to slide and then overturn—police will now carry out investigations to determine what transpired.
