As South Africa focuses on 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children, a three-year-old child was savagely killed by the one person who should be defending his life, his father. An incident which has left the Escourt community in a state of shock.
The heinous event unfolded on 26 November 2020 in the Thembelihle area of Escourt, after the child’s father fetched him from his grandparents’ home, where the youngster had been living. Captain Nqobile Gwala, SAPS spokesperson, says, “On Friday, 27 November 2020, when the grandmother returned from work, she noticed the child was not at home.”
When the suspect was questioned about the whereabouts of the now missing boy, Captain Gwala explains he became violent. Adding, “That is when the family members decided to search for the missing child.”
Unfortunately, the search came to a tragic and horrific end when the young boy’s lifeless remains were found later that afternoon—his mutilated body hidden among the bushes, with a nail inserted into his skull.
The police were immediately alerted and responded to the scene.
Captain Gwala states, “A 36-year-old man (the child’s father) was then placed under arrest for murder,” and in addition to the arrest, “the missing body parts were found inside the suspect’s house.”
KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula has condemned the brutal killing, stating, “I am glad the suspect is behind bars to answer for his evil deeds.” Natasha Ramkisson-Kara, KwaZulu- Natal National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson, points out the father has since been charged with murder and possession of human tissue.
Our deepest sympathies go out to the boy’s grandparents and family, and may the scales of justice weigh in your favour.
With court proceedings set to take place at the Escourt Magistrate’s Court, the matter was postponed for this week, in order for the father to undergo a preliminary mental observation. As investigations continue and the legal proceedings prepare to begin, what are your thoughts on the incident?
