The novel coronavirus, COVID-19, continues to plague South Africa and scores of other countries. Globally there has been over 6, 714,314 confirmed cases.

Out of this figure, there has been over 3,261 ,271 recoveries and 393,408 deaths. On Thursday evening, June 4, Health Minister, Dr Zweli Mkhize confirmed South Africa’s figures have shot up to 37 525 confirmed cases. While there are regrettably 792 COVID-19 related deaths, the number of recoveries stands at 19 682.

As the virus continues to spread, the infections have resulted in certain government agencies having to shut their doors.

This follows a statement from the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), which explains staff members from three of its offices in KwaZulu-Natal have been infected.

The SASSA officials hail from the Mandeni local office, Ladysmith local office and Midlands district office.

“The Department of Health has been requested to test all affected officials and whilst awaiting the results, these officials will be on self-isolation,” SASSA explains in its statement.

Furthermore, SASSA explains the District management have also arranged for the decontamination of the District and local offices concerned.  It is against this background that the offices had to close.

In the meantime, SASSA Midlands District office and Ladysmith local office clients are requested to use the eZakheni local offices. The Mandeni clients can use the Stanger local office for all social grants applications or services.

For further enquiries, residents can contact the SASSA toll-free number: 0800 60 1011 or 033 846 3400.
