In the pursuit of justice, police officers are often in the frontline. Dedicating their lives to protecting the community, police play a major role in society.
However, a presentation by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) paints a bleak picture on police activities over the past few weeks.
Reporting to the Provincial Safety and Security Portfolio Committee this week, the IPID reported the number of assault cases against police officers from KwaZulu-Natal has increased substantially.
The presentation was in regard to the KZN provincial performance on investigations on cases received, during the lockdown (level 5 and level 4).
During the month of April, the IPID reported that 48 cases of assault were opened against KZN officers. From May 1 to May 19, there were a staggering 80 recorded cases.
The IPID explains that most of the assaults reported, occurred at roadblocks and both SAPS and SANDF members were involved.
“Members from various units are conducting operations in KZN, thus in majority cases the suspects are unknown,” the IPID report reads.
According to the IPID, one of the biggest challenges they are facing with the investigations, is that it is difficult for victims to describe or identify the perpetrators. This is due to the officers wearing facemasks during the lockdown.
