The COVID-19 pandemic continues to plague the world. Globally, there are over 4.9 million confirmed cases.
However, while there are over 320 000 deaths around the world, the world’s health sector has proven to be a formidable force as there has been over 1.9 million recoveries.
In South Africa, the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases has risen to 16 433.
The provincial breakdown is as follows:
- Eastern Cape – 2052
- Free State – 163
- Gauteng – 2343
- KwaZulu-Natal – 1567
- Limpopo – 88
- Mpumalanga – 76
- North West – 72
- Northern Cape – 37
- Western Cape – 10 035
With the growing number of cases, Health Minister, Dr Zweli Mkhize says it is with regret that the COVID-19 related deaths have also risen. The total national deaths currently stands at 286.
“We wish to express our condolences to the loved ones of the departed and thank the health care workers who cared for the deceased,” Dr Mkhize says.
However, not all is doom and gloom, with the number of recoveries in South Africa standing at 7298.
The Department of Health emphasises that as we prepare for the easing of lockdown regulations, high-risk age groups and those with co-morbidities such as hypertension, diabetes, cardiac disease, obesity and people living with HIV must take extra precautions and necessary steps to avoid possible exposure to COVID-19.
Residents are also encouraged to continue practising social distancing, wear face masks and practice good hygiene at all times.
