The COVID-19 pandemic has brought life as we know it to a grinding halt. The nationwide lockdown seeing people confined to their homes.
However, while the lockdown is in place to curb the spread of the virus, several people have lost their source of income. Now, unable to work and generate an income to feed their families, what can they do?
In their time of need, there are those who have risen to the challenge, doing their part to ensure the less fortunate have food. One such individual is Sanele Zwane of Sanza Lounge in Barry Hertzog Park.
On Wednesday, April 22, Zwane donated food hampers to five Barry Hertzog families.
The families were selected through the assistance of the ward councillor, to ensure those in need were reached.
“I understand there is a need in the community. If those of us with businesses are suffering in the lockdown, how bad are those without employment and a steady income suffering?” says Zwane.
As his business is situated in Barry Hertzog Park, Zwane says he decided to plough back into the community.
But why does Zwane feel it is so important to donate food hampers to the less fortunate during this difficult time?
“If you don’t help give food to the needy, there is a chance that crime will increase as people will get desperate to feed their families. Also, if you are in a situation to help someone else, you should do it, as people need to eat.”
Tshepo Hlanga of Sanza Lounge adds, there is a reason why people have two hands. “One hand is to assist yourself, while the other hand is to assist others.”
Furthermore, Hlanga says that while the government has put measures into place to assist the less fortunate, there is only so much they can do.

Therefore, Zwane and Hlanga believe that Newcastillians should unite as one and assist each other where possible.
Well done to the Sanza Lounge team for ensuring their community was supported.
