In the quest to curb the spread of COVID-19 in South Africa, a nationwide lockdown came into full effect on March 27. Every South African’s life changing in an instant.

While the 21-day lockdown is meant to minimise the spread of the feared coronavirus, it has had a devastating effect on the lives of scores of Newcastillians.

Unable to work, there are residents whose only source of income for food has come to a grinding halt.

Now sitting in their homes, these people now face a bleak challenge. How do they feed themselves and their children? How are they going to see the lockdown through without being able to provide for their loved ones?

With several families in and around Newcastle suffering from extreme poverty and a shortage of food, as a direct result of the lockdown, the time has come for the community to band together in these challenging times.

A food drive is now being driven, where food hampers are being made and distributed to families in Newcastle and surrounding areas.

Driven by Ithemba Security, the initiative is one of epic proportions, with over 220 families fed to date.

However, while sponsors have contributed to the food drive, funds are currently being depleted. The Newcastle community is now being called upon to assist in feeding those families who are now unable to feed themselves.

The organisers are now calling Newcastillians and local businesses to open their hearts by contributing to this worthy cause.

To contribute to the cause, residents can donate food items and deliver it to Ithemba Security at 16 York Street.

Residents can donate funds to the following banking details:

RRB (Rapport Ryers)

ABSA

Account Number: 1090147648

Branch code: 632006

Reference: Name/Company, Food Hamper Covid-19

For those who know of less-fortunate residents or are in dire need of assistance, contact Andrè on 083 258 6071, Adele on 073 272 7247 or Charity on 064 412 5654.

With hundreds of people being helped, a special thanks goes out to Dr Ronnell Singh and Urshla Singh for assisting every day, as well as the other sponsors.

Be sure to contribute to this cause and help save a family today.
