The fear of the novel coronavirus, Covid-19, has struck home with President Cyril Ramaphosa taking centre stage on Sunday evening, March 15, and declaring a national state of disaster.

With the South African government enforcing a number of measures to safeguard South Africans, Mediclinic is following suit to protect its patients from the virus.

In a statement released today, March 16, Mediclinic stated it will be implementing temporary measures in regard to visitors.

“We realise that with the increase in the number of these cases, it is necessary for us to manage the situation responsibly in the best interests of our patients and healthcare workers,” the statement reads.

Furthermore, Mediclinic states that while they believe that allowing patients access to their loved ones is an essential part of their recovery and wellness, it is just as important to reduce the risk for all.

As a result, they now wish to implement the following temporary measures with respect to visitors with immediate effect. Visiting hours are now to be limited from 3pm until 4pm and from 7pm until 8pm.

Furthermore, Mediclinic states that strictly no more than one visitor will be allowed per bed in any unit. Surgical patients may only have one individual as support on the day of surgery

“As the local situation evolves, the above decision will be reassessed,” the statement concludes.

If anyone believes they have come into contact with someone with Covid-19, an emergency hotline has been set up. Contact 0800 029 999 for assistance.
