Dogs are the very epitome of love and loyalty, selflessly giving of themselves to protect their loved ones. Yet, their unwavering love is not always returned.

Five dogs from the Mangaung Metro Municipality Law Enforcement Department have been confiscated and euthanised. This following concerns that they were kept in poor conditions.

Bloemfontein SPCA Inspector Charmain Engelbrecht explains the conditions in which the dogs lived, were terrible. Left in rusty kennels, the dogs could barely support their own body weight and had severe musculoskeletal problems.

Left in the kennels by themselves, the SPCA claims thick grass around the kennels indicates that there were irregular visits to the dogs.

Engelbrecht adds that if the dogs knocked over their water bowls in the morning, they were not given more water until the next day.

The SPCA claims it had visited the Mangaung Metro Municipality Law Enforcement Department on numerous occasions, even going as far as to issue the department with a warning to improve the animal’s living condition.

However, no action was taken by the relevant authorities. Therefore, the Bloemfontein SPCA confiscated the dogs and they had to be euthanised.
