The time has finally arrived. The school holidays are coming to an end, with teachers, parents and children all preparing for the upcoming school year.

With schools set to start this week, the KwaZulu-Natal education department claims everything is prepared for the 2020 academic year. As preparations for the school year are underway, the department now braces itself to welcome 2.8-million pupils on Wednesday, January 15.

At Sivananda High School in KwaMashu on Monday (January 13), Education MEC Kwazi Mshengu presented the province’s state of readiness for the impending school year.

He claims the department has done its best in preparing for the new school year, with the department ready for whatever 2020 has in store.

With KZN sporting a 5.1% increase in the national senior certificate pass rate, Mshengu says the department will not allow the improvement to hinder their mission of improving in 2020.

He claims that by focusing too much on positive pass rate, educators and the department can be led into a state of complacency. This is something which he says cannot be allowed.

While looking forward to the 2020 academic school year, the department has a lot of work still lined up.

During the months of April and November 2019, a staggering 144 schools were damaged in KZN by storms. However, despite the damage caused by the storms, Mshengu claims contingency measures are in place to ensure all the schools are operational by Wednesday.

He claims the department has made the necessary arrangements to supply mobile classrooms. The procurement processes are also at an advanced stage; to provide the necessary materials to rebuild the schools.

Furthermore, Mshengu adds all textbooks and teacher support material has successfully been delivered to schools.

Good luck to all the pupils and teachers as they brace themselves for the 2020 academic year.
