Is racism still alive and well in Northern KwaZulu-Natal? It would seem so, with the Provincial Department of Education investigating allegations of racism at Ladysmith High School.
This follows video footage of the incident going viral on Wednesday, August 14. The video, which was posted on Twitter by parody account Advovo Wabantu, shows a learner entering the school’s boy’s toilets where a racist slogan is splashed across the wall.
Kwazi Mthembu, the provincial education spokesperson, has confirmed the racial slur was written in the school’s toilet.
Condemning the act, Mthembu says he finds the racist slur disturbing and that there is no space for racism within their school.
While confirming the department will be investigating the matter, Mthembu explains that in order to defeat racism, it needs to be fought against as a collective.
As investigations are underway, with the department intending to punish the guilty parties, it seems South Africans are still fighting an ongoing struggle against racism.
What are your thoughts on the situation? What form of punishment do you feel the guilty parties should face? And how do you feel racism can be eliminated from society? Share your views and thoughts with us in the comment section below.
